Why I Started Thompson Literacy & Learning

By Heather Thompson | Structured Literacy Specialist, UFLI & IMSE Trained | Thompson Literacy & Learning

“Every child is a reader. Sometimes they just need the right person in their corner — with the right tools, consistent care, and a whole lot of encouragement.”

It Started With a Love of Plants

If you know me at all, you know I love plants. There is something deeply satisfying about tending to something small and fragile, giving it exactly what it needs day after day, and watching it slowly stretch toward the light and thrive. I never expected that my love of nurturing growing things would become the heart of my teaching philosophy — but here we are. I believe children are exactly like plants. Given the right environment, the right nourishment, and consistent, loving care, every single one of them will grow. Every one of them will thrive. That belief is the foundation of everything I do at Thompson Literacy & Learning — and it is where our tagline was born: Nurture. Grow. Thrive.

The Moment Everything Clicked

I have always been drawn to working with young children. But it was when I dove deep into the Science of Reading that something truly clicked for me. I pursued training through both UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute) and IMSE (Institute for Multi-Sensory Education) — two of the most respected structured literacy programs available — and what I learned changed everything about how I approach teaching reading. Reading is not a skill children simply pick up on their own. It is a complex neurological process that must be explicitly taught, systematically and sequentially, using methods grounded in decades of research. And yet so many young children — especially those in the critical PreK through 2nd grade window — are not receiving this kind of instruction early enough. I knew I had to do something about that. And so Thompson Literacy & Learning was born.

Why One-on-One Structured Literacy Tutoring Works

In a classroom, a teacher may have 20 or more students. Even the most dedicated educator simply cannot give every child the individualized attention they need — especially a child who is beginning to struggle. That is not a criticism of teachers. It is simply reality. And it is exactly why one-on-one structured literacy tutoring is so powerful for early readers. When I sit with a child in a session, I can meet them exactly where they are. I can see in real time what is clicking and what needs more attention. I can adjust my approach on the spot. And I can celebrate every small win in a way that genuinely changes how a child sees themselves as a learner — because confidence is just as important as skill.
